Wicking Dementia Research & Education Centre

Overview

The Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre (Wicking Centre) is a centre within the Menzies Research Institute. It was established in 2008 and is primarily funded by the JO & JR Wicking Trust which is managed by ANZ Trustees, as well as contributions from the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services.

The Wicking Centre aims to be recognised internationally as a centre which confronts the leading issues related to the increasing numbers of people with dementia.

This unique, integrated Centre has four main programs:

Best practice management for dementia care health services - Investigating dementia diagnosis, residential facility design for people living with dementia, dementia in a rural context and the development of a database of people with dementia to enable information sharing for better dementia care services.

Support for Carers of people living with dementia - exploring the information and service needs of carers and providing guiding options for life with dementia through the development of decision aids and resilience tools for carers.

Clinical and biomedical research - including understanding the causes of dementia and investigating drug and non-drug treatments.

Workforce training and development via seminars for aged and health care service providers, supporting scholarships for dementia related studies and developing a post-certificate dementia education program.

The Wicking Centre actively encourages collaboration with other dementia researchers and institutions, and has affiliations with the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, as well as international collaborations with the National Centre of Medial Research, Montpellier, France and the Dementia Services Development Centre, University of Stirling, UK.
