How important is your health? What about the health of your family and friends? At Menzies, your health and the health of all Tasmanians is our number one priority.   Menzies’ world-class medical research is making a positive difference to people’s lives, right here in Tasmania and around the world.

Our research helps to alleviate the impact of serious diseases on individuals, their families and  the community. Menzies’ success is built upon the generous support we receive from the local community. In return, we are committed to giving back to the community through our research into heart disease, dementia, cancer, Parkinsons Disease, mental health, osteoporosis and many other diseases that affect Tasmanians. Today, I am asking you to help us in the fight against disease by making a donation to our research. Every dollar of your gift will be used for research in Tasmania.

I’d like to share with you the outstanding work we are currently doing in the area of multiple sclerosis (MS). I hope  this will inspire you to support an urgently needed Senior Research Fellow in this area. MS is a chronic degenerative and unpredictable condition that randomly attacks the brain and spinal cord. There is currently no cure, but treatments are available to modify the course of the disease and ease some of the symptoms. MS affects more than 23,000 Australians and two million people worldwide. Most people are diagnosed between  the ages of 20 – 40 years. The incidence of MS increases each year and costs the national economy more than  $1 billion annually. Alarmingly, Tasmania has Australia’s highest per capita prevalence of MS and there is currently no known cure for this devastating disease.

With these worrying statistics in mind, Menzies will invest significant resources into MS research, aimed at finding  answers for this devastating disease. Preventing or curing disease needs much more than researchers, it needs people who share our  desire to help others. I urge you to help us by making a donation today.

Kind regards,

Professor Alison Venn
