The University of Tasmania has welcomed cardiologist Professor Tom Marwick as the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania's new Director.
The University of Tasmania has welcomed cardiologist Professor Tom Marwick as the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania's new Director.
Prof Marwick brings to Tasmania a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise in medical teaching and research.
UTAS' Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Rathjen, extended a warm welcome to Prof Marwick.
"The University community is very pleased Prof Marwick is joining us to guide Menzies and to be part of the University's Senior Management Team.
"Our new Medical Sciences 2 building is nearly complete; the arrival of Prof Marwick, along with the rapid progression of the Domain Precinct, brings an exciting synergy.
"As a respected cardiovascular expert with many years of academic, research and teaching experience behind him, Prof Marwick will strongly guide the Menzies' focus on population health and disease."
Dr Dan Norton, Chairman of the Menzies Board, said the Board and staff were delighted by the arrival of Professor Marwick.
"Menzies is about to enter another exciting era. We have a great team and fantastic new facilities.
"We now welcome Professor Tom Marwick as our new Director.
"We are very excited to have such a distinguished research leader and clinician to guide our efforts to deliver improved health outcomes for people in Tasmania and elsewhere," Dr Norton said.
Professor Marwick has a strong interest in research directed at practical health outcomes. He has an outstanding record in both research and research leadership in Australia and internationally.
Prof Marwick recently moved back to Australia from the United States to take up the position.
He said he was thrilled at the opportunity to head up Menzies.
"It is a great honour to have been selected as the Director of Menzies," Prof Marwick said.
"I am very keen to maintain the status of the Institute as a go-to resource for addressing health problems that are pertinent to Tasmania.
"Menzies will continue to focus its efforts on the major disease burdens of the Tasmanian community, including such diseases as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, multiple sclerosis, arthritis and dementia.
"The research skills at Menzies reflect the burden of disease in Tasmania and I'm sure that we can continue to make a meaningful contribution to improving the health of the community.
"Menzies has the ability to perform high-quality basic, clinical and population health research in an environment where the community and government are engaged and supportive," he said.
