Two Chinese students from the Menzies Institute for Medical Research are among about 500 worldwide to be recognised by the Chinese government for outstanding academic achievement.

The students are Lei Si and Xingzhong Jin, who are both PhD candidates at Menzies. Lingling Gao, a PhD candidate from the University of Tasmania's School of Business and Economics, was also recognised. Across Australia 35 Chinese PhD candidates were recognised.

The students have each received the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad, which has recognised outstanding academic achievements across different fields since 2003.

Lei Si is a health economics researcher at Menzies and is looking at the economic impacts of osteoporosis in China.

Xingzhong Jin's primary area of research is the risk factors and preventive treatment of osteoarthritis. His major PhD project is to examine the usefulness of vitamin D supplementation in treating osteoarthritis.

At the award ceremony in Melbourne the Chinese government also acknowledged the contribution made by the students' supervisors. Lei Si's supervisors at Menzies are Professors Andrew Palmer and Tania Winzenberg. Xingzhong Jin's supervisors are Professors Changhai Ding, Graeme Jones and Leigh Blizzard.
