New Tasmanian Dementia research network launched

Menzies' Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre will announce today the establishment of a new Dementia Research Network for Tasmania.

Menzies' Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre will announce today the establishment of a new Dementia Research Network for Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Dementia Research Network aims to gather and maintain research currency in dementia health care requirements for Tasmania.  The new network is funded by the University of Tasmania Community Engagement Grant scheme.

Professor Andrew Robinson, Co-Director, Wicking Dementia Centre says the new network will enable the Wicking Dementia Centre to collaborate more efficiently and effectively with key health sector stakeholders. This will ensure Tasmania stays at the forefront of dementia research and in supporting the increasing number of people with dementia in the state.

"Our researchers have the capacity for ongoing delivery of clinical and translational programs leading to cutting edge research across a wide range of health specialties. Maintaining research currency is of paramount importance," Professor Robinson said.

Mrs Diana Carter, Executive Officer, Wicking Dementia Centre, will establish and run the new network. The network will involve representatives of community and aged care service providers and aged care peak body organisations including Alzheimer's Australia Tasmania and Aged & Community Services Tasmania.

"Monthly round table meetings will enable open discussion around issues important to the future research of dementia," Mrs Carter said.

Mrs Wendy Quinn, Director, Clinical Advice and Network Development, Department of Health and Human Services (Tas), strongly supports this project.

"We are very pleased to learn of this valuable opportunity to engage with clinicians, researchers and the broader community," Mrs Quinn said.

The Wicking Dementia Centre is a member of the Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG).

The Wicking Dementia Education and Research Centre was founded in 2008 and is primarily funded by the JO & JR Wicking Trust, which is managed by ANZ Trustees.
