This week is 'Brain Week', and as part of the festivities, the winner of the State's Brain Bee challenge will be announced at 3pm today at the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania.

As Australia's only neuroscience competition for high school students, The Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) motivates young people to learn about the brain.

Tasmanian Brain Bee organiser and Menzies' Research Fellow, Dr Rob Gasperini says that the Brain Bee is an excellent opportunity for students to participate in an international competition and to start thinking about a possible career in biomedical neuroscience research.

"This Brain Bee course integrates into year 10 science teaching with aspects of chemistry, biology and physics studied in the neuroscience context," Dr Gasperini said.

"The students come from all over the State and have completed Round One as an on-line test."

"Round Two is being held today at the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania in Hobart, with the winner announced at 3pm."

"It will give our state finalists unique insights into the world of medical research," he said.

Round Two will test each of the finalists on their knowledge about important facts concerning intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, aging, sleep, Alzheimer's disease and stroke.

The winning student from each State or Region Final will go on to represent their State or Region in Round Three at the National Final to be held on the Gold Coast in January 2012. The winner of the National Final has the opportunity to represent their country in The International Brain Bee Competition (IBB) to be held in Washington DC, USA in 2012.
