Governor-General visits Menzies

The Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, CVO and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, will today visit the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania (Menzies) to see first-hand the world-class research Menzies undertakes.

Her Excellency is the official patron for the Menzies Foundation, a non-profit organisation that together with the University of Tasmania was largely responsible for the formation of Menzies, an institute of the University of Tasmania, in 1988. This will be the Governor-General's first visit to Menzies.

During their visit, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce will be briefed on Menzies' recent research successes and shown around Menzies' research laboratories by Menzies' Director Professor Simon Foote.

The tour will be followed by an informal morning tea where the Governor-General and Mr Bryce will meet one-on-one with a number of researchers and students to hear about their latest work. The Governor-General will also be given the opportunity to meet with other Menzies staff, study participants and volunteers.

Menzies' research efforts focus on preventing a range of diseases including cancer, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic lung disease, mental health and dementia.

Menzies Director Professor Simon Foote said the Governor-General's visit is a wonderful opportunity for Menzies to showcase its world-class research and adds to the prestige of Menzies.

"I am delighted and feel honoured to host the Governor-General and Mr Bryce during their visit to Menzies," Professor Foote said.

The visit comes as Menzies is in the midst of even greater expansion with the construction of its second building Medical Science 2 (MS2) well underway.

MS1 and MS2 will be integrated into one world-class facility.
