Menzies Director farewells Institute supporters

The Director of Menzies Research Institute Tasmania, Professor Simon Foote today met with supporters of the Institute for the final time, to thank and farewell them, before his departure as Director.

The Director of Menzies Research Institute Tasmania, Professor Simon Foote today met with supporters of the Institute for the final time, to thank and farewell them, before his departure as Director.

Professor Foote presented a talk to over 75 long-term supporters of the Institute, which covered Menzies' research highlights and the future of the Institute.

Professor Foote will leave Menzies at the end of the year to become Dean of the Australian School of Advanced Medicine at Macquarie University, Sydney.

After first being appointed Director of Menzies in 2005, Professor Foote has held the position for the past six and half years.

During this time he has implemented a significant growth strategy that has seen Menzies undergo a dynamic transformation into Tasmania's premier medical research facility.

"I have greatly valued my time at Menzies and I am confident of the direction that Menzies is headed in," Professor Foote said.

"Menzies has rapidly grown to become a nationally recognised Institute and a powerhouse of research."

"This is particularly reflected in the tremendous support we receive from the Tasmanian community, including our donors, volunteers and study participants."

The Tasmania Police Charity Trust also took this opportunity to present Menzies with a cheque for $40,000, which was raised from their annual bike ride held in November.

The money raised will help Menzies continue its vital research into childhood illnesses including cystic fibrosis, neurological repair, leukaemia and lymphoma.

"It is support like this from the Tasmanian community, that makes Menzies really special," Professor Foote said.

Professor Alison Venn will step into the role of Acting Director while an international search takes place to fill the position.
